Quite possibly the goriest movie that I have ever seen, this movie takes the cake when it comes to the goodness of Johnny Depps acting skills lol if that even makes sense. Basically the movie takes place in London and for the most part on just one street. Its about a man named Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp) who lives a fairly simple life until one of the judges has him deported and rapes his wife which causes her to commit suicide. Their daughter grows up thinking that the judge is her father basically. The judge (Alan Rickman) does not want anyone “deflowering” his “daughter” so he does the only noble thing a man can do when he has a hot illegitimate daughter…he tries to marry her. The only problem is that she doesnt want to, and Sweeney Todd is back in town for the first time in “many years.” He proves himself as a barber by beating a salesman in a shaving race. He opens up his own shop on top of a friend/new #$%^ buddy Mrs. Lovett. With her help and the help of an estranged, young, impressionable boy, he successfully murders several people in his barber shop. He basically takes out half the power of London successfully. He kills pretty much everyone who steps into his shop who doesn’t serve some future purpose to him. Im not usually into musical movies, but this one is pretty sweet. Its all about killing people who have help destroy his life. He burns the bodies which makes the air smell rank.

Little Voice (Jane Horrocks) is a child-like woman, a recluse, grieving over the death of her father. His record collection, which they listened to together, now provides Little Voice with her solitary recreation. She has listened so often to the records that she is able to impersonate the voice and manner of several female vocalists, among them her father’s favorites-Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe and Shirley Bassey. Mari (Brenda Blethyn), Little Voice’s tin-eared mother, is irritated by her daughter’s seclusion and by her record-playing, until a slimy agent, Ray Say (Michael Caine), convinces Mari that Little Voice can be a star and make their fortunes.

Little Voice is based on Jim Cartwright’s play The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, which premiered in 1992 at the National Theatre in London. Horrocks, whose delightful impersonations bring Garland and Monroe back to life, also starred in the stage version. Mark Herman, the writer/director of Brassed Off, adapted Cartwright’s play and directed the film. While Herman may have seemed a good choice because of his earlier success, an adaptation involving British working-class characters not unlike Mari and Ray Say, his screenplay misses the mark. It spends too much time on minor characters like Ray and his sidekick, club owner Mr. Boo (Jim Broadbent), in an attempt to externalize Little Voice’s interior struggle. In her quest to create a life beyond her room, Little Voice confronts something far more profound than the machinations of these unscrupulous men: her mother’s insensitivity and jealousy. Herman’s screenplay trivializes the psychological and spiritual aspects of Little Voice’s struggle to make herself heard over her mother’s screeching criticism. Perhaps the adaptation to film was a mistake altogether, but, in any case, this is a story that calls for a more experienced screenwriter and director.

What rescues the film somewhat are the performances by Horrocks and by Ewan McGregor as Billy, a pigeon fancier who works as a telephone installer. He is drawn to Little Voice’s shyness and to her separateness, qualities he shares. Together, they seem to rise above the gritty, working-class reality of this seaside town, he with his pigeons and Little Voice with her music. McGregor, who appeared in Brassed Off and in Trainspotting, shows a different side here, an ability to handle an introverted and emotionally complex character. Horrocks is nothing short of magnificent. Aside from her remarkable ability to impersonate-her renditions of ‘Daddy’ and ‘I Want to Be Loved by You’ will send chills up your spine-she manages to embody the archetypal struggle for identity in a way that transcends any attempt to trivialize it. Caine’s and Blethyn’s performances are marred by Herman’s direction-they’re too often over the top. In a small role as Sadie, Mari’s friend, Annette Badland (Hollow Reed, Angels & Insects), who has even fewer spoken lines than Little Voice, is quite memorable.

In New York, the washed-up singer Alex Fletcher has a decadent career singing his old hits in amusement parks, school reunions or dinner parties to survive. In the 80′s, he was a successful singer of the band POP with Collin Thompson, but when his partner split, his solo-career was a complete failure. His manager and friend Chris Riley schedules a meeting with the successful teen singer Cora Corman and Alex has a chance to be promoted in a show if he delivers a new song for Cora’s concert in the end of the week. Alex has difficulties to put lyrics in his melody, but he accidentally discovers Sophie Fisher, who is temporarily watering his plants and proves to be a sensitive poet and efficient lyricist. Their song is approved by Cora, but they disagree about her interpretation, while they fall in love for each other.

Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell) is a brilliant cellist who has just finish performing a concert in New York City. Lyla goes out on the town with her girlfriend and end up at a party near New Yorks Washington Square. She meets Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) an Irish guitar player. They share the love of music and end up falling in love and bonding together that night. It was the most wonderful night in Lylas life. Lyla must rush back to the hotel where her father Thomas (William Sadler) is waiting for her. Lyla promised to meet Louis in Washington Square, but her father forces her to go to her next concert. They are like two ships that pass in the night, never to see each other again, except for the fact that Lyla is now with child. Sadly, Lyla is in a car accident and the unborn child is lost. Eleven years pass and Lylas father is on his death bed, and he must tell her the truth that he secretly gave Lylas baby boy up for adoption. August Rush (Freddie Highmore) is her child, who was born with the gift to hear music all around him. He believes that he will find his parents if they only hear his music, because they are truly bonded by their music.

The Right: Jeong-Hyun Lim (FunTwo)

About 8 months ago a strange and unusual video showed up on YouTube, the video-sharing site that now shows more millions of videos a day. A unconsequential figure in sky-blue T-shirt, his eyes hidden by a brown baseball cap, was playing electric guitar. Light raced through the seemingly invisible window behind him and he played in what appeared to be almost a smoke-filled room. The video was called simply “guitar.” A simple title card gave the performer’s name as “funtwo.”

The piece that “funtwo” played with mounting dexterity was an exceedingly difficult rock arrangement of Pachelbel’s Canon, the composition from the turn of the 18th century known for its solemn chord progressions and its overexposure at weddings. This arrangement was different because it asked for a number of high skills such as “sweep-picking” and concentration beyond anyones standard.

“Over and over the guitarist’s left hand articulated strings with barely perceptible movements, sounding and muting notes almost simultaneously, and playing complete arpeggios through a single stroke with his right hand.” His accuracy and speed seemed record-breaking, but his mouth and jawline – to the extent that they were visible – looked impassive, with none of the exaggerated grimaces of heavy metal guitar heroes. He looked like a Mozart playing a guitar. The contrast between the soaring bravado of the undertaking and the reticence of the guitarist gave the 5-minute, 20-second video a gorgeous solemnity. The frames in the video cannot even keep up with him at some parts.

Like a celebrity sex tape or a Virgin Mary sighting, the video drew hordes of seekers with diverse interests and attitudes. Guitar sites, MySpace pages and a Polish video site called Smog linked to it, and viewers thundered to YouTube to watch it. If individual viewings were shipped records, “guitar” would have gone gold almost instantly. Now, with nearly 7.35 million views – and a spot in the site’s 10 most-viewed videos of all time – funtwo’s performance would be platinum many times over. From the perch it’s occupied for months on YouTube’s “most discussed” list, it generates a seemingly endless stream of praise (riveting, sick, better than Hendrix), exegesis, criticism, footnotes, skepticism, anger and awe.

The question of the hour is who is this figure???
I was able to trace funtwo’s video to Jeong-Hyun Lim, a 23-year-old Korean who taught himself guitar over the course of the last six years. Now living in Seoul, he listens avidly to Bach and Vivaldi, and in 2000 he took a month of guitar lessons. He plays an ESP, an Alfee Custon SEC-28OTC with gold-colored detailing. Its amazing that he has only been playing guitar for about six years now.

If you are not a member of YouTube.com, you might have trouble playing the video or finding it for that matter so I have done my homework and added it to my site here.
